Are you essentially self-help artists’ groups who reach out to your existing social circles? Or do you have a wider reach? Who are they?? 02:00:48 Lisa Rahman (she/her): https://www.rabbitsroadpress.com/blog/2020/5/3/onlineoffline-spring-school 02:02:16 Emma Edmondson (she/her): V good question ~ TOMA is very local focussed in Essex / Southend but we welcome in artists from London ~ Hemel Hempstead, we do open calls for our ops / workshops / open crits ~ https://www.toma-art.com/opencrits 02:04:30 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): http://altmfa.blogspot.com/ 02:04:41 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): https://www.feralartschool.org/ 02:04:47 Emma Edmondson (she/her): James / Maddie SOTD can you rename yourselves so we can find you please?! 02:05:14 Sophie Chapman she/her: Into The Wild offers spaces to artists from across the UK, when the open call runs we share it on the usual arts platforms, but also pushed this year to extend it beyond the normal arts networks too. Artists are selected based on what they will get out of having a programme of this kind, but also what they will bring to it - an interest in collaboration, as well as challenging and rethinking the infrastructures around art, is key. 02:05:34 Sophie Chapman she/her: I think we can always do more to reach beyond the typical arts/uni networks though! 02:06:00 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Conditions: https://www.89gloucesterroad.org/ 02:06:22 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Yes I reiterate what Sophie says we are open to anyone coming to visit hang out chat ~ get in touch toma@metalculture.com we love new peeps 02:07:41 AS dee: Great going everyone! Fantastic sharing of practice! 02:08:17 Sophie Chapman she/her: Elle Reynolds! One of the best teachers <3 Byam Shaw <3 02:08:27 Emma Edmondson (she/her): ELLE IS A LEGEND 02:08:30 Maria Bird she/her: woot - represent! 02:09:03 Lu & Bella TOMA Zine Workshop: yessssss elle!!!! 02:09:04 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Nice backdrop Elle 02:09:21 Anna she/they: Great to hear you Elle!!!! 02:12:44 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Thanks John! studioELL: https://studioell.org/ 02:13:04 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): https://www.instagram.com/schoolofthedamned/ 02:16:58 Anna she/they: Online learning gives me more freedom to learn when I want around paid work, volunteering, caring and self care needs 02:18:54 jackie goodman: Comment: At Feral Art School our teaching has been face to face but we realise how useful an online learning facility is given the recent Covid situation. We wouldn’t ever want to operate principally online but see that we need to set up some online provision. However, this is challenging in terms of resources as the technology needs to work really well to be effective. 02:20:03 emmaliebeskind: Question to the commentators - we have been hearing about the amazing diversity of artist-led groups - but how has learning online happened (if at all) for members of the group without institutional accreditation that is meaningful for the participants? 02:20:10 Sophie Chapman she/her: Question: does anyone know of more accessible online tech for those that needs screen readers for example? 02:21:31 Conditions - Matthew Noel-Tod (he): Conditions was initially started in opposition to art ed and art practice had devolved into laptops and bedrooms… this was pre: COVID-19 02:21:32 Maria Bird she/her: Shy radicals all the way- being able to participate and contribute but without having video has been very liberating. 02:24:20 Stephanie Bolt: Shy radicals/quiet radicals - harking back to the collective approach of early Open University c/o Stuart Hall. 02:27:03 jackie goodman: Can we get Stephanie to expand on her point about the early Open University model? 02:27:17 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Oh yes 02:30:00 Neeral (she/her): I had no idea the OU was on tv! 02:30:07 Jessica El Mal she/her: Me neither! 02:30:25 Neeral (she/her): I have vague memories of my mum working on OU stuff when I was a kid...it seemed very mysterious and wonderful. 02:30:34 Neeral (she/her): I need to seek out an OU documentary... 02:30:41 Emma Edmondson (she/her): oh wow so cool 02:30:47 Emma Edmondson (she/her): I wonder if they’re available on Youtube? 02:30:58 Neeral (she/her): Let's investigate... 02:31:02 Emma Edmondson (she/her): YES 02:31:03 Anna she/they: It's interesting that the OU is attributed to being started by Lord Young... whitewashing? 02:31:16 jackie goodman: I think the OU model reminds us that it’s worth taking some time to think around possible online models rather than doing the obvious 02:31:24 Neeral (she/her): Is there debate over who the founder is...? 02:31:42 iPhone: comment - inclusivity has been awesome. I know of so many people who are preferring online and stats for a couple of groups I’m involved with show 25% prefer it. We must ensure these accessible approaches continue 02:31:56 Anna she/they: Not a debate in some circles Lord Young is attributed as the foudner 02:32:07 Conditions - Matthew Noel-Tod (he): Yes agree with SOTD comments - we have had similar experiences 02:32:07 Jessica El Mal she/her: I think @Sophie Champman can relate as we had to switch ITW from offline to online very quickly 02:32:42 Sophie Chapman she/her: Yeah Jess maybe you can say a little about how it has been to switch to online as someone in the group? 02:32:56 Emma Edmondson (she/her): TOMA put our IRL programme on pause and formed a made-for-online programme hosted by Morgan Quaintace during lockdown exploring Yale literary theory together as a group 02:33:13 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Also had group crits / tutorials - agree with SOTD smaller groups work better 02:33:26 Sophie Chapman she/her: Yes - not everyone has high speed internet! 02:33:31 Stephanie Bolt: https://www.co-op.ac.uk/Event/adult-education-research-circles-webinar 02:33:36 Jocelyn (she/her): Comment: I agree about online tech point, I don’t think virtual should become a replacement or cheaper ‘get-out-clause’ for institutions, but it has definitely given an alternative and more flexible way for people to get involved. I run the youth program for an arts charity in cumbria (as well as being an artist), and having the tech has definitely helped to diversify our participants. e.g. more disabled participants, people suffering with their mental health (no pressure, can switch video off), children from families that might find it difficult to bring their kids to onsite workshops, tutors from further afield (they don’t need to travel to cumbria for a 2 hour workshop). at the same time, a blended approach is key because so many people don’t have the space, equipment, benefit from the face-to-face, etc 02:34:10 Neeral (she/her): Good point about online should not become a way for institutions to cut costs... 02:34:13 Lu & Bella TOMA Zine Workshop: Yessss!!! There is a great zine on how to protect yourself online by Rise Up Collective too :) 02:34:45 Stephanie Bolt: @Neeral also check out the adult ed 1919 Report by the Ministry of Reconstruction 02:35:09 Neeral (she/her): Thanks Stephanie 02:39:07 Bryony (she/her): Emma - could you please post a link to the Yale online programme you referenced? 02:39:52 Emma Edmondson (she/her): https://oyc.yale.edu/english/engl-300 02:39:53 Emma Edmondson (she/her): so good 02:39:59 Bryony (she/her): Thank you! 02:41:41 Jai Tyler (she/her): Comment: Yes 100% agree that working in groups can be tricky if you’re not taught how. I’ve been working with a friend to develop some ‘how to collaborate’ workshops that actually teach labour division amongst other things. It’s not something that’s taught and is so key 02:42:05 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Oh wow these workshops sound great! 02:42:30 ZC Claire Callow (she/her): Jai, that sounds great. Do let us know details please? 02:42:35 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Yes please Jai 02:43:35 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Yes that’s a great idea 02:43:43 catherine harrington she / her: Sharing work when you a self organised group is definitely tricky .. doing workshops or having a forum to agree together how to share is really important 02:45:22 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Please share more info if you're planning to or already run sessions on collaboration / self-organisation here! 02:45:43 Emma Edmondson (she/her): YES time 02:46:47 Stephanie Bolt: @Anna Stuart Hall info ref OU here https://ounews.co/arts-social-sciences/society-politics/sixty-years-ago-stuart-hall-arrives-to-renew-the-left/ 02:47:30 catherine harrington she / her: thanks Stephanie! 02:53:29 Stephanie Bolt: Sharing this on community learning crossing into adult ed & Raymond Williams and the site of the webinar in this as a platform - how we situate ourselves / how inclusive this is/not etc http://www.raymondwilliamsfoundation.org.uk/events1.html 02:54:57 Jai Tyler (she/her): @Sophia & all re: collaboration / self organisation workshops. Yes, I’ve led some sessions before on how to collaborate and helpful tools or hacks for collaborating in ways that include everyone - but also in a way that feels pragmatic and shares the load. Be interested to hear if others have done anything on this too. Feel free to drop me a line on @jai_tyler / jai.tyler@outlook.com 02:56:34 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Thanks Jai! 02:57:09 Stephanie Bolt: Sharing @Culturaldemo with work on Lottery distribution 02:59:15 Stephanie Bolt: Plus a possible link / blog on mutual aid etc https://freedomnews.org.uk/time-for-artists-mutual-aid/ 02:59:25 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Thank you and thanks Jai! 02:59:28 Abel: Hi everyone, Thanks for all of this! We are Abel Shah, an artist duo and also run a residency from our home called residency 11:11. We are currently working on a research project / digital library collating ideas around collaboration and its relation to accessibility, language and sharing. We’d be really interested in chatting to people about there experiences with collaboration, what collaboration actually means and the shift from the “singular” artist hierarchy. This is just in short. we are currently doing research by interviewing and having informal chats and email exchanges. If you’d be interested in getting involved by having a chat with us to be part of the digital library please get in touch email: abelshahstudio@gmail.com 03:00:09 Emma Edmondson (she/her): Thanks Abel Shah! 03:01:30 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): A list of resources on self-organisation https://videomole.tv/self-organisation/ 03:01:40 Emma Edmondson (she/her): YES, we will save chat 03:02:01 Claire Morris-Wright: Yes please to transcript of chat. 03:02:29 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): This is part of an ongoing research project so check back and if you have any suggestions please send them to sophia@videomole.tv 03:02:45 Anna she/they: Tuckmann Group therory 03:03:09 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Thanks! 03:03:17 Elle Reynolds (she/her): https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_86.htm 03:03:25 Jai Tyler (she/her): Forming, storming, norming and performing: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_86.htm 03:03:35 Jai Tyler (she/her): :) great minds 03:03:41 Miki Shaw - Juggernauts - (she/her): Thanks Jai :) 03:04:23 Anna she/they: Forming, norming, storming, performing and the bit that is often left our mourning/adjourning - this is why we can feel sad after a project ends and we need to build in time to recover 03:04:42 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Yes! 03:05:17 Maya & Quentin ( they/them ): Thanks for the links ! 03:05:40 Anna she/they: Sam - love this context 03:05:43 Stephanie Bolt: This work might interest people - https://bankjob.pictures/bank collective purchase of locxal debt! 03:05:59 Elle Reynolds (she/her): Just a thought around what Jessica was saying about space for self, in a No Telos workshop we started sessions with breathing exercises (closed eyes and cameras off) led by choreographer artist Emma Cocker. Listening to our breathing. Which helped us to get into a different space of not starting with the mediated screen. 03:06:32 sophia kosmaoglou (she/her): Great idea! 03:07:20 Stephanie Bolt: Could we have a link to the Solidarity Syndicate work please - was this connected to the Solidarity ACE application?
