Julia Lee Barclay has been directing since 1980 and writing stage texts since 1999. She worked with performers in NYC in exploratory laboratories from 1997 to 2001 in pursuit of theatrical tools to articulate a vision which existing forms did not embody. As a director and writer, her work has been produced, commissioned and published in NYC and London and shown throughout Europe. She has taught workshops in techniques discovered in these labs at universities, theatres and conferences throughout the UK and US, and founded Apocryphal Theatre, a company emerging from an exploratory laboratory started in 2004 in London at Camden People’s Theatre. Apocryphal completed a run in 2006 of The Jesus Guy and is now touring that show and back in labs. Julia has received a three-year bursary from University of Northampton to write a PhD related to her practice entitled Apocryphal Theatre: Holding Tension.
