"Method without discipline"
These brief introductory remarks address how the demand that contemporary art be a critical undertaking determines it to be a rigorous method of situated enquiry. Such a methodological operation however suffers several 'faults' with regard to conventions of subject-specific research, primarily that contemporary art has no defining boundary or object of analysis – especially not 'art'. While the absence of such definition or limit grants art its extra-ordinary license and 'promiscuous' interdisciplinarity, it also means that critical art as method proceeds
without disciplinary authority, security or ambition.
