BAK, Pauwstraat 13A NL-3512 TG, Utrecht
In six weekly sessions, the participants learn about how contemporary art relates to the political in an accessible way. The course zooms in on the historical period starting with the pivotal year 1989 to today. The sessions are based on an in-depth analysis of concrete works of art, supported by readings of texts on contemporary art and its intrinsic links to present-day society and politics. The course is taught by Maria Hlavajova, BAK’s general and artistic director. The case studies and examples of art works are mainly from BAK’s renowned international projects Propositions for Non-Fascist Living (2017–ongoing), Former West (2008–2016), and Future Vocabularies (2013–2016). Each sequence of the course provides clear insights into selected artistic practices in order to highlight larger trends and developments in the contemporary art field. The course addresses the changing understanding of artistic production today, as well as of the notion of the public and art institutions. Simultaneously, the course helps participants to familiarize themselves with main concepts and the most urgent questions at the heart of art and politics. Participating in the course is open to all concerned with the question as to what art can do in times like ours. Prior knowledge or experience in the subject matter is not required (with the exception of the deep reading sessions listed above). A Curriculum for the Non-Unified Self
6 Apr 2019, 2pm–7pm

Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, St James’, London SE14 6AD
“What the beyond of teaching is really about is not finishing oneself, not passing, not completing…” Fred Moten and Stefan Harney. The University and The Undercommons. This parallel event to CCA’s exhibition How Chicago! draws on two aspects of Imagist practice. Firstly, a consideration of their approach to the human figure in which the body was fragmented and distorted. The second is their coalescing around the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where teachers such as Ray Yoshida, Kathleen Blackshear and Whitney Halstead inspired and provoked their students to develop a style that was informed by alternative art histories and vernacular material cultures. Taking a cue from this foundational Imagist curriculum, which was motivated by a desire to decentralise and diversify, we ask what an arts curriculum for a non-unified self might look like; one that considers its students, and the possibility of knowledge production, to be always in flux and contested. CCA invites practitioners from different disciplines to reflect on the process of the transmission of knowledge and to propose their own curricula as a series of workshops. Aspects of each will be published on our website after the events as a distributable curriculum for the non-unified self.

SF Trans*Plant by Quimera Rosa
Tue 9 April – Sat 13 Apr 2019, 13:00-18:00 daily

The Art Pavilion, Clinton Rd, London E3 4QY
A theoretical-practical bio-hacking/bio-art workshop, part of EcoFutures Festival. £70-80 for the 5 day workshop / includes material costs / only 10 places available. With a commitment to creative self-experimentation, open-source data and biomedical research, Quimera Rosa’s workshop will utilise bio-hacking DIY techniques to challenge binary identity principles that often separate humans from their non-human relations. This workshop is based on two years of biomedical research arising from the artist’s project Trans*Plant, and the ethical issues they encountered through its development.  “My disease is an artistic creation,” aims to replicate and release a medical technique called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat condylomata of HPV. A second strand develops a protocol for the first intravenous chlorophyll in humans. During this workshop participants will be introduced to the legal and ethical frameworks for working with biological materials, as well as techniques and tools to work with cell cultures. With this knowledge, and through the use of various biomedical techniques, each participant will create a new symbiotic being based on a composite preparation for plant cells and mycorrhizal fungi with the contribution of human material (cells, hormones or bacteria).  The workshop is aimed at people who are interested in the (de)construction of identity or who want to experiment with it. No prior knowledge is required as we encourage a curious and experimental approach.

BAK Summer School: Art as Politics 22-26 July 2019
Application deadline: 1 May 2019

BAK, Pauwstraat 13A, NL-3512 TG Utrecht
The BAK Summer School: Art as Politics brings together practitioners involved in arts, academia, and social action to collectively think through, generate, and invigorate critical artistic practices that work to grasp and intervene into the present. Asking after the ways in which art is politics, the program centers artistic practices that live in the overlapping spaces amongst cultural production, art, aesthetics, and political domains often considered as separate. Through case studies, storytelling, theory, presentations, discussions, workshops, study groups, and exercises, the BAK Summer School: Art as Politics asks about and speaks to art as the cracks, fissures, hacklabs, loopholes, queerings, or illegibilities in which radical (re)workings can flourish. Concepts of alternative practice, contemporary constructions of “we,” institutional structuring, potentials of performative collectivity, etc. are discussed and practiced so as to think through the potentials when we conceive of and enact art as politics. The fee for the course and materials, to be paid upon acceptance, is 450 EUR. Accommodation by the Utrecht Summer School is an additional 200 EUR, for which you can sign up during your application process. Fees exclude meals and travel. Limited fee reduction scholarships are available to exceptional applicants who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Call for Artists, Art the Arms Fair
Closes 15 May 2019

In September 2019 the world’s largest arms fair will quietly set up shop in London, selling weapons and tools of torture to delegates from all over the world. Art the Arms Fair is a two-week multidisciplinary arts festival established in 2017 and run by a group of volunteers, aiming to challenge the silence surrounding DSEI, and to increase critical public discourse relating to the trade of arms. In 2017 we worked with hundreds of artists and performers – amateurs, professionals, big names and first-timers alike, including Banksy, Guerrilla Girls, Cassetteboy, Dizraeli, and Peter Kennard, raising over £250,000 for anti-arms and human rights campaigning organisations and gaining extensive international press, TV and social media coverage. We are inviting artists to contribute works of all kinds for Art the Arms Fair 2019. We accept submissions of any medium, from artists of all levels of experience. Works should address the arms trade in some way, and might explore themes such as the refugee crisis, war, environmental destruction, surveillance, or police repression. You may wish to propose alternatives to the production of weapons, or explore the other human costs of arms manufacture. We will also be running a program of events, so musicians, poets, performers, comedians, actors, etc. are also welcome to get in touch. We ask that each artist submit only one work; all selected works will be sold or auctioned to raise money for Campaign Against Arms Trade. There is no entry fee, and we are unable to pay artists for their work.

Deadline to apply: Monday 16 July 2018, 10am

What is the alternative?, has become an ever-more urgent question. As an alternative to competitive object-based narratives, Art Licks Weekend: Peripheries supports the development of immaterial practices and projects, with a focus on care and exchange. Projects from regional cities can apply for 2018. Art Licks will organise a series of events for participants in the lead-up to October, to give time and space for those taking part to discuss shared concerns and methods, and to build on the support structure that the festival model creates.

The Ghost Tide’s location on the Thames, in a fast-changing area of the city, alludes to the presence of artists in this part of London, as a migratory tide of creative flotsam and jetsam which ebbs and flows as the city gentrifies and develops. We are interested in works of a material nature – sculpture, installation, wall based works etc, though we do have room for some audio visual pieces.

Limehouse Town Hall, 646 Commercial Road, London E14 7HA
Precarious Workers Brigade (PWB) invites you to a two-day assembly to take stock, self- educate, make new alliances, and plot what is to be done about the state of cultural labour at this critical moment. How can we discuss cultural democracy in increasingly post-democratic conditions and rising fascism? In the context of ‘post-work’ and increasing automation, how do we organise and imagine different forms of mutuality, commoning, cooperation and basic income beyond the wage? How can we reclaim the right to cultural activities as common spaces of joy and pleasure against the imposed austerity and accelerated gentrification? We are calling cultural workers, artists, cleaners, activists, educators, students, and all those who have a stake in these questions to join us. In these two days, we will hear from each other, we will share short provocations on core issues to prompt collective discussions, build common agendas and take action.

One-Off Moving Image Festival 2018 Open call
Deadline: 1 February 2018
One-Off Moving Image Festival, Valencia, Spain
Noemata is exited to invite artists and film-makers to participate in this first edition of One-Off Festival! We’re looking for one second moving images on the theme of HOME IS… All movies will be screened during the festival February 19-25, 2018 in public, urban settings in Valencia, Spain and the net. A selection of films will be screening in at 60Seconds Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark and all movies will be included in the next Leap Second Festival. The awkwardness of a 1 second movie about home emphasizes the relation between technology and precarity. Pervasive technology allows for a self-precarization, a return to a nomadic or possibly dislocated way of life, a hunter-gatherer of jobs, money, material or general welfare. The 1 second format is almost like an empty message, like the snapchat ‘streak’ – a meaningless, random image just serving to keep the daily communication going. The home key on a keyboard brings you to the start of a document, the top of a page, the start of your own history as a human browser – home as your starting point. But where are you when you hit the end key – have you come home – home as an end point? Where are we at the end of history? With our knowledge and consciousness of an ultimate end to ourselves and the world, does it make home an even more cherished notion, in spite of its impossibility?

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018 Submissions open
Application deadline: 22 January 2018, 5pm
New Contemporaries 1st Floor Rich Mix 35-47 Bethnal Green Road London E1 6LA
Since 1949, New Contemporaries has organised an annual, open submission, touring exhibition for current and recent graduates. This high-profile platform has become nationally recognised as a barometer of work emerging from UK art schools. For its 2018’s open call, New Contemporaries will accept submissions from a number of non-degree awarding programmes. Its decision to open up access to opportunities to artists developing their practice outside of formal education reflects the organisation’s values of independence and democracy. New Contemporaries recognises that tuition fees, student loans and the cost of living make it a challenging environment for artists from a broad range of backgrounds to enter Higher Education. It also understands that artists enter alternative models of education often through necessity due to financial and personal commitments, as well as through an increasing interest in the specific offer alternative programmes of study can bring.

Cézanne and the Fetishism of Commodities Masterclass with T.J. Clark
30 & 31 January 2018, 18.00-20.00
Birkbeck, University of London. Room B01, Clore Management Centre, London WC1E 7JL
Free event open to all for one or both sessions: Book your place
Speaker: Professor T. J. Clark, Visiting Professor at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (Oct 2016 – Sept 2019) and Professor Emeritus of Modern Art at University of California, Berkeley.
Still life was central to Cézanne’s artistic project, and his 20th-century admirers often claimed he had turned the genre into a new kind of history painting. Cézanne’s recasting of still life is fully aware of the genre’s bourgeois origins but his world of objects, and the access to it he provides the viewer, are in the end decisively different from those of his forebears. The ‘objecthood’ of his familiar utensils, bits of drapery, apples and oranges, has an uncanny feel. These classes try to characterize the new ‘atmosphere’ and ontology of the object-world on show, with the aid of the famous discussion of commodity fetishism in Marx’s Capital.

Jerwood Artist Bursaries
Deadline: 4 December 2017, 5pm
Jerwood Space, 171 Union Street, Bankside, London, SE1 0LN
Visual artists within 10 years of graduating or establishing their practice are invited to apply for 12 bursaries of £1,000 for the development of their practice. Call for Proposals Research Network 2018: Duties of Self-Care
Deadline for proposals: Thursday 30 November 2017, 5pm
Stuart Hall Library Rivington Place London EC2A 3BA
In a society dominated by capital, we are used to measuring our health in relation to our productivity. What strategies can artists and activists use to oppose this? The next Research Network will revolve around how artists attend to self-care in an economic climate of austerity and instability. It will address tactics for reclaiming control and responsibility as a way of rejecting institutional exploitation, when financial, mental and physical precarity is the accepted state of being for artists. How do artist and activist collectivities provide structures for support and self-care and protection against burnout? What is the artistic obligation to social responsibility, engagement and ethically conscious practice? Who or what does the artist have a duty to? Does it benefit the artist? Is it ethical for precarious artists to fulfil societal roles that should be paid for by the state or other institutions? The Stuart Hall Library is now looking for artists, curators, activists, students and researchers to respond to ideas around art, activism and self-care for research network events to take place February – December 2018, as part of Iniva’s artistic programme. The Research Network acts as a testing ground for new ideas within a peer group. It is a meeting place for the discussion of practice-based or more conventional forms of research that may include: visual arts, film and media, curatorial practice, cultural studies, social sciences, cultural activism, postcolonial studies, literary studies, including criticism and theory. Proposals are encouraged from artists, curators and practitioners working in the fields listed above.

Call for Papers: Against the Slow Cancellation of the Future
Deadline: 15 May 2017
Goldsmiths, Lewisham Way, London SE14 6NW
CCS Conference 15 – 16 June 2017
It seems at once obvious and naïve that we look to the future when considering the transformation of society as a project in which we ourselves take part. Our frame of reference is Franco “Bifo” Berardi’s “slow cancellation of the future”, which we in the same breath proclaim our opposition to. Mark Fisher reminds us that its meaning “is not only that sense of termination, but [also] the gradual nature of it”; the future not having been unashamedly ripped from our grasp, but rather stolen away silently, piece by piece. We welcome papers within but not limited to areas such as: decolonial/postcolonial/indigenous studies and practices, migration and sovereignty, ecofeminisms, (mental) health and capitalism, critique and the future of cultural studies, biopolitics and beyond, and the crisis of neoliberalism.

Application deadline: Thursday, 13 April 2017, 10am

The 2017/18 Pete Lloyd Lewis Studio Award offers a free studio to one artist for one year from 1st June. The award is open to applications from Fine Art MA/MFA graduates who completed their courses in either 2015 or 2016. The award commemorates the work and life of Pete Lloyd Lewis, artist and founding member of Chisenhale Art Place. Pete’s practice was playful, experimental and open to diverse influences and media, from text, glitter and celebrity photojournalism, to sculptural installation, video and print. He was preoccupied with the boundaries between the artificial and the real, often amplifying the synthetic qualities of materials and forms by contextualising them in relation to nature. He used collaboration and curating as methods of investigating the expanded possibilities of image-making in dialogue with different communities. The successful application should demonstrate how aspects of the applicant’s own practice could make connections with, or respond to, the themes and ideas that shaped Pete’s work.

Contemporary Photography Theory
30 Jan – 20 Mar 2017, Monday evenings 18.30–20.00
The Photographers’ Gallery, 16 – 18 Ramillies St, London W1F 7LW
Contemporary Photography Theory is an 8-week evening course led by Jonathan P. Watts. Recent voices of dissent within higher education have argued that photography theory has not developed its scope of subject matter or its theoretical horizons to account for the many processes, often digital and networked, it finds itself ingrained within. As Sharon Harper writes, for photography courses ‘credibility rests significantly with theoretical engagement, most often characterised by “critical” approaches developed by Cultural Studies and Poststructuralism in the 1970s and 1980s’. These, along with seminal texts by Susan Sontag, John Berger, Roland Barthes, and Victor Burgin continue to form the basis of critical photography education today. Drawing from across disciplines – computing to media archaeology to neuropsychology and artists’ writings – this course will reorientate the student with ideas concerning the production, distribution and interpretation of photographic-based imagery today, ideas concerning machinic gazes, virality, software materiality, surveillance technologies and spam.

Open call for EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial 2018
Deadline: 31 January 2017, 12pm (GMT)

EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial, Limerick City
Since its inception in 1977, EVA has expanded its Open Call as a tool for curatorial research, democratizing the biennial spectrum for art practices across media, generations and locations. The selection process of the For EVA 2018 is a call to respond to “the current state”. This could be a reflection on the current state of your work, the current state of government, the current state of art history, the current state of ideology, or a reflection on how the state of today reminds you of the state of yesterday. Rather than a monolithic thematic exhibition, EVA 2018 wishes to establish a cosmology of exhibitions; a kaleidoscopic ecology of intertwining group shows with essayistic, retinal and bodily narratives. The 38th edition of EVA International will be open Apr-Jul 2018, across various locations in Limerick City. Selected artists will receive artist fees and production budgets as appropriate.

Open Call for the 6th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art “Imagined Homes”
Deadline for submissions: 31 January 2017, 21:30
Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki, Warehouse B1 Thessaloniki Port, Thessaloniki 541 10, Greece
The sixth edition of the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art will run from September 2017 to January 2018. Under the title “Imagined Homes” the curatorial team seeks to investigate how the idea of home changes today. Home as a place where someone feels safe and accepted is no longer a certainty, since thousands of people are obliged to leave their homeland for another, hopefully safer, place. The Biennale will attempt to trace the imagined construction and fluidity of home as a projection and future expectation, through incorporating past experience, trauma and loss. Displacement and hybridity, emerging domesticities, practices of inclusion and new community concepts articulated on alternative visualizations of gender, religious or family bonds are the main issues around which the exhibition narrative will be structured. This open call aims to encourage visual artists who work around these issues in any contemporary medium (painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, video, installation, performance, new media).
