ART&CRITIQUE (2015-2019)

A&C_banner-2015-2019

ART&CRITIQUE was a peer-led and volunteer-run alternative art education network dedicated to critical engagement with art practice, theory and research. It was founded in November 2015 and based at The Field and LARC. We employed collaborative, co-operative and collective models of pedagogy and organisation and fostered alternative models of art education in a series of public events. Looking for the Art+Critique course instead?

[SYMPOSIUM] book club was a monthly reading group for artists, researchers and anyone interested in the intersections between art practice and critical theory. [STUDIOCRIT] was an opportunity for artists, curators, designers, film-makers and other producers to present their work to an audience of peers for discussion and feedback. [ARTCRAWL] was a chance to view and discuss exhibitions within walking distance from each other. These regular events were free and open-access, independent, collaborative, self-organised and self-funded. We also organised workshops, participated in festivals and ran non-profit courses.

ART&CRITIQUE’s diverse membership included artists from a range of disciplines, educators, curators, writers, theorists and activists. Our combined skill-set drew on experience in the arts, research, education, collective and cooperative organisation, activism, event organisation, publishing, curating, information technology, participatory and site-specific projects. As a group we aimed to learn from each other and collaborate toward a more equal society.

In 2016 we initiated a collaborative research project on alternative art education, radical pedagogy and self-organisation, to prioritise and develop our pedagogical and organisational methods, and to constitute ourselves as a co-operative art school. This project evolved into the Radical Pedagogy Research Group.
